Apperance
Betta fish is more popular with their long tail and attractive colour. There are many types and colours of betta fish. These include vibrant colours like red, blue, green, purple, orange, yellow, white, and black.
The black betta fish is not rare in the world. But the pure white or platinum betta is very rare among them. However, as a result of their breeding, new-colored fish are seen constantly. The black betta fish is most famous for being relatively hardy and easy to care for.
They generally range in size from about 2.5 to 3 inches (6 to 7.5 centimetres) in length. In the case of Black Bettas, their fin size can range from relatively minor to quite large, depending on their specific genetic traits and breeding. Some black bettas may have long, flowing fins, while others may have shorter fins. But due to the environment and care, they can grow bigger.
There are many species of this betta fish, many of them have long tail and many have short tail.
There are different types of tails, such as:
- Veil tail (VT): This is one of the most common tails. The tail fin is long and drooping, like a veil.
- Crowntail (CT): The ends of the tail fin are long and point like a crown.
- Halfmoon (HM): The tail forms a semicircle when fully spread. Forms a “D” shape.
- Double Tail (DT): Instead of a single tail fin, the fish has two distinct lobes on its tail, giving it a “double” appearance.
- Delta Tail (DT): Like a crescent moon. It forms a triangular shape when fully spread.
- Plakat (PK): This breed has a short, rounded tail, similar to wild-type bettas.
- Rosetail: This is a variation of the crescent that has excessive branches, creating a ruffled appearance.
- Spade Tail: Resembling a spade or shovel shape.
- Round Tail: The ends of the tail are rounded and fan-like.
- Combtail: A mix between a crown tail and another tail, resulting in slightly longer ends with less mesh.
- Over Halfmoon (OHM): An exaggerated version of the Halfmoon, with its tail spread over 180 degrees.
But usually, the tails of female fish are a little shorter than male fish.
History & Origin
As I said earlier, these betta fish are usually found in South Asian reservoirs or rice fields. Notable among these are Thailand, which was before known as (Siam), Vietnam, Laos, etc.
Usually this area is concerned with less oxygen. So it helps them to develop this labyrinth organ, which allows them to breathe above water.
If we want to talk about its history, then no such history of this fish has been found. However, this betta fish has been bred in various ways over the centuries. Initially, they were kept for gambling entertainment in Thailand, where the audience would bet on the outcome of a fight between two male bettas. These games were a significant part of Thai culture.
It became known in the West in the mid-nineteenth century when the French naturalist Piet Carbonier took the fish to France. They became trendy in Germany in the late 19th century.
Because of their beautiful fins and tails, they are being bred internationally on a large scale. As a result, their fins and tails have also improved a lot. This fish is now known all over the world because of its ease of rearing. People of all ages love it.
Behaviour & Temperament
Some variations in this plague betta fish set it apart from other fish. They are a very territorial fish. They tend to defend their territory. To protect their territory, especially from their other males. They are very aggressive towards other males. They were burning their gills and fins to show their power. Females can be assertive but less so than males.
It is generally recommended to keep Black Bettas alone or with peaceful tank mates. That will not provoke aggression. Suitable tank mates may include small, non-aggressive fish, such as certain species of tetras, rasboras, or bottom-dwelling fish, such as Corydoras catfish.
Although these bettas can live with other fish under the right conditions, they are primarily solitary forest fish. They often prefer to live alone. Their ample hiding places in the aquarium help to reduce their aggression levels.
It would help if you remembered that their level of aggression depends on their species.
Habitat & Tank Requirements
If you want to create an ideal habitat for your black bat, you must provide an environment suitable for its health and comfort. Let’s discuss these.
Therefore, first, you need to take care of the aquarium size, water volume, filtration, decor, substrate, lighting water quality.
Aquarium size: A single Betta generally needs an aquarium of at least 2 to 5 gallons or 19 L. But it is better not to keep it in too deep water.
Water Parameters: Black betta thrives in warm conditions. Ideal water temperature is 78°F to 82°F (25°C to 28°C). Try to keep pH between 6.5 to 7.5 & DGA 5 to 15.
Filtration: Since it prefers slow-moving or stagnant water, a gentle circulation system is suitable for maintaining water quality. In that case, a sponge filter or small internal filter is more appropriate.
Decor: The black betta likes lots of hiding places and places to rest. Soft plants with broad leaves are ideal. Avoid sharp trees. Try to create natural habitats.
Substrate: Try sanding the tank with soft, fine gravel. Which helps them to rest. But avoid rape material, which can hurt their fins.
Lighting: High light barriers may be encountered for these fish. So please keep it in general light. Try to create a day-night cycle.
Water quality: They usually prefer to live in old water. However, it is better to change the aquarium water after a few days. So that ammonia and nitrate levels are low. You can add a pinch of salt to the water for better results.
If you can take care of all these things above, Betta Fish will have a comfortable environment. But if this is an exception, the fish often die.
Diet & Feeding
The diet of black bettas is vital for their health.
Diet Type. Pellet foods specially formulated for bettas are available that contain high quality protein. They also enjoy live food. The diet of black bettas is vital for their health.
Feeding frequency: Feeding adult blackbirds once or twice a day is usually sufficient. Avoid overeating, as obesity can lead to other health problems. Juvenile bettas are best fed three times a day for growth.
Food supplements: Bats are primarily carnivorous but occasionally eat plants. You can’t give them chopped vegetables like spinach, peas, and jossini fibre. Vitamins in a balanced diet usually do not require additional supplements. If you want to give it, then give it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. But beware of over-supplementation.
Garlic: Some aqarist believe that garlic betters immunity and increases appetite. There needs to be more scientific evidence. So sometimes you can give them garlic mixed food as a treat.
Water Conditions During Feeding: Remove any uneaten food after feeding. Make sure the aquarium water is stable while feeding the food. Impure food can degrade water quality. So be aware of that.
Variety and Balance: A balanced diet is essential for optimal health. So use frozen, dried live or pelleted food.
Health & Common Diseases
Black bettas have various health problems that affect their beauty. Here are some common issues. Tips for maintaining health and preventing illness:
Fin Rot: Fin Rot is a bacterial infection that occurs between the betta fins & the tail.
As a result, the fish look discoloured. This can be caused by inadequate water, stress or injury. To prevent this, change the water regularly and treat it with medicine. If necessary, isolate the affected fish.
Ich (White Spot Disease): Ichthyophthirius multiphysics, commonly known as itch, is a parasitic infection that causes white spots on fish’s bodies, fins, and gills.
It can be caused by insufficient water or infected fish. To prevent ich, maintain stable water conditions, isolate new fish before introducing them to the main tank, and avoid sudden changes in temperature. If ich occurs, treat the tank with appropriate medication and provide supportive care, such as salt baths.
Dropsy: Dropsy is a condition characterized by swelling of the better body, often accompanied by pinecone-like profusion on the scales.
It can be caused by bacterial infection, organ dysfunction, or inadequate drainage. To prevent dropsy, maintain usual water quality, and provide a balanced diet. If dropsy occurs, chlorinate affected fish, treat with antibiotics if bacterial infection is suspected, and provide appropriate care such as Epsom sauce baths.
Velvet (Odinium): Velvet is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan parasite Odinium. It appears as fine, golden or rust-coloured dust on the body and fins of fish. Bad water or infected fish can cause velvet.
To prevent this, maintain stable water and separate new fish. If it is, treat the tank with an appropriate medication. Raise the water temperature slightly and provide a salt bath.
Constipation: Constipation is a common problem in Bettas. It is often caused by overfeeding, improper diet, or insufficient fibre intake.
To prevent constipation, eat a balanced diet with a variety of foods. Avoid overfeeding and provide occasional servings of vegetables such as peas to aid digestion. If constipation occurs, fast bteta for a day or two. Then, give a pea or use a commercial betta-specific laxative.
Tail Biting: Tail biting is a behavioural problem in which a betta may bite its fins. This can cause damage and possible infection.
It can be caused by boredom or inadequate tank conditions. To prevent tail biting, provide enrichment such as plants and tank decorations. Maintain stable water conditions.
Keep the above points in mind, and isolate and treat any infected fish. Then you will have a good experience keeping this fish.
Breeding & Reproduction
Carefully select suitable breeding pairs for breeding Black Bettas. Provide suitable spawning conditions. Here is an overview of the breeding process:
Selecting suitable breeding pairs:
– Choose healthy, mature bettas with desirable characteristics such as vibrant black colour, well-formed fins and a firm overall appearance. Select a male and female betta. Which complement each other to produce the desired offspring.
– Consider the temperament of the bettas when selecting breeding pairs. Avoid pairing aggressive or overly dominant individuals, as this can lead to aggression during breeding and potentially harm the female.
Conditioning of Breeding Pairs:
– Before breeding, feed a high-quality diet rich in protein. Feed them live or frozen food such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia to increase their reproductive readiness.
– Keep breeding pairs in separate tanks of similar water. Provide plenty of hiding places and plants to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
Identification of Breeding Pairs:
– When the breeding pair is ready, put the male and female bettas in a breeding tank. Make sure the tank is smaller than usual and has less water to facilitate spawning.
Spawning Behavior:
– Initially, the male burns his fins, builds a bubble nest and may chase the female. Females may respond with vertical stripping and submissive posture.
– When the male successfully attracts the female to the bubble nest, spawning occurs. The male wraps his body around the female, releasing sperm (milt), while the female releases the eggs. The eggs are fertilized by milt and float to the bubble nest, where the male collects and guards them.
Removal of Women:
– After spawning is complete, remove the female betta from the breeding tank to prevent her from being injured or killed by the male. Breeding can be a stressful experience for female bettas, so keep him in a separate tank.
Egg and Fry Care:
– Male bettas guard nests and tend to them until the eggs hatch, which usually takes 24 to 48 hours. Once the fry hatch, they will initially stay in the bubble nest, and the male will continue to guard and care for them.
– After a few days, the fry will become free-swimmers and begin to explore the tank. At this point, you can keep the male betta from the breeding tank from preying on the fry.
– Feed fry first with infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, then convert to powder or finely crushed flakes as they grow. Give frequent small feedings throughout the day to ensure their nutritional needs are met.
Maintaining Water Quality:
– Keep the breeding tank clean and maintain stable water parameters to ensure the health and development of the fry. Perform regular water changes and monitor water quality parameters such as temperature, pH and ammonia levels.
Conservation Status
Currently, there are many bats in aquariums. But very little is found in the environment. To conserve wild bettas, initiatives like habitat conservation, research, and captive breeding programs should be undertaken.
These measures should address threats such as habitat loss and over-pollution. This can ensure the long-term survival of these freshwater fish.
