Betta Fish

“Betta splendens” is scientific name of Betta fish . It is also known as Siamese fighting fish for its aggressiveness.

Betta fish is the most popular pet fish currently. It is a trendy fish among aquarium keepers.

It is most famous for its mind-blowing structure, size, fins, grill, lifestyle, and betta fish colors. Their bright colors and flowing slimness will captivate you.

Betta fish are small South Asian fish. They are found in rice fields and shallow water with less oxygen. Because of this, they can live above water.

It is impossible to say exactly how many colors are available in Betta Fish. It depends on its breeding. But I have listed below the colors that are commonly available.

Let’s dive into the fascinating world of betta fish colors.

Scientific Reasons

There is a science hidden behind their attractive colors.

Betta fish get their colors from specialized cells called chromatophores. There are three main types:

Iridophores: These cells contain reflective pigments called guanine, that produce iridescent and metallic effects. Think of them like tiny mirrors!

Xanthophores: These contain yellow and red pigments.

Melanophores: These produce the black pigment melanin.

These cells and pigments determine the colors we see in betta fish.

Patterns of betta fish

In these betta fish, you can see the color and the variety of patterns. These varied patterns are also very dear and hold a place of love for me.

Different patterns make fish even more interesting to look at. Generally, There are six different types of patterns.

The first is called Solid, where the whole body and fins are one color. This pattern is the most popular in the world.

The second is Bi-color, where the body and fins have two distinct colors, which will captivate you.

The third is Butterfly, where the body is one color, and the fins have a different color along the edges.

The fourth is the Dragon, With thick and metallic scales, the fish has a dragon-like appearance.

The fifth is Marble, where swirls of multiple colors across the body and fins.

The last one is called Koi, which is similar to the patterns found on koi fish. These patterns often have patches of red, white, and black.

Rarity

Different colors and availability depend on the breeders. It may change over to me.

The ones you can catch (such as true purples, white and oranges) are challenging to breed and rare.

Color Change

As we have previously learned, selective breeding has led to the development of many colors in Betta fish. But do you know, due to some reasons, the color of this fish changes by itself. Some of the points are briefly highlighted below.

Let’s find out..

Old Age: As the fish ages, the color starts to lighten slightly and may lose its vibrancy. But this is a general matter.

Natural Development: As with other fish, batters may naturally undergo some color change as they mature. As young fish grow, their color becomes intense and bright.

BreedingDuring breeding, especially female fish, may notice a change in color. Females may turn pale to indicate mate readiness.

Stress response: A common cause of betta fish discoloration is stress. Factors such as sudden water changes or inadequate tank arrangements or aggression from mates or shifting environments can all stress these fish. As a result, its color may be faded or darkened.

Diseases: Some changes in its color can be seen due to various diseases. For example, betta fish affected by parasites, bacterial infections, or fungal infections may exhibit changes in color along with other symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, or abnormal swimming behavior.

Environmental reasons: Sometimes the color changes based on the tank’s decoration and food. For example, its color can be slightly brighter if given more light or good quality food.

These were just some of the reasons that result in changing the color of the betta fish.
